Launch of 6th edition of CNIL-Inria Privacy Award

13 July 2021

The sixth edition of the CNIL-Inria "Privacy Protection" Award 2021 is open for submissions starting from July 13, 2021. It will reward a scientific paper on privacy and personal data protection published between January 2019 and June 2021.

Which works are concerned by the award?

The award is intended to promote research and to raise awareness among citizens and decision-makers on privacy and data protection issues.

Submitted papers must present work conducted at least in part in a research centre located inside the European Union and must aim at improving the protection of personal data and privacy.

The article must be written in French or English and describe a fundamental research result, a technical innovation, a didactic presentation of the state of the art, or an interdisciplinary approach. It should be possible to convey the substance of the contribution of the article in terms accessible to non-experts.

Possible topics include (without limitation):

  • privacy by design;
  • algorithm transparency;
  • privacy enhancing technologies (PETs);
  • anonymisation;
  • privacy risk analysis;
  • control on personal data;
  • accountability;
  • technical challenges and solutions to implement the GDPR.

What changes from previous editions:

There are several changes from previous editions that are specified in the Competition rules. The two main ones are:

  • It is no longer necessary to submit proof of consent from all co-authors when submitting the entry. It is the responsibility of the submitting author to ensure that all co-authors have given their consent. However, it is still necessary to submit, in addition to the article, the reviews, a presentation of the article to the general public as well as general information. See Article 5 of the Competition rules.
  • The members of the jury can now apply for the prize. The new organization planned this year based on an enlarged jury allows jury members to be authors or co-authors of candidate papers by proposing an ad hoc conflict of interest management mechanism. However, the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the jury are not eligible to apply. See Article 4 of the Competition rules.

How can I participate?

Applications must be submitted before 17 September 2021 at 23:59 CET on the Easychair system.
